Minister Truss announces $837,000.00 for Mornington Shire
Australians living in remote communities will benefit from improved access to basic services and essential deliveries such as food, medicine and mail, through airstrip upgrades projects approved under the Australian Government’s Remote Airstrip Upgrade Programme.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss today announced funding of $11.6 million for upgrades to airstrips in New South Wales, Queensland, West Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.
“This funding is part of the Government’s announcement in the 2015–16 Budget of $33.7 million over four years for access and safety upgrades for remote community airstrips,” Mr Truss said.
“These airstrip upgrades will ensure continued community access to essential healthcare services, including emergency medical evacuations, improved access to work and educational opportunities, and help connect residents of remote communities through passenger air services.
“While not appreciated in the cities, local airstrips are vital in the delivery of essential goods and services to remote communities, including medical care. They also better connect remote communities with each other.
“With such vast distances spanning our continent, safe and functioning remote airstrips are often the only reliable means of transport for people living in our most isolated areas.
“Given smaller aircraft often service these communities, simple measures such as providing a smooth runway or keeping wildlife away can make all the difference in a safe landing.
“This demonstrates the Australian Government’s active and ongoing commitment to improving services to regional and remote communities across Australia.”
Mornington Shire Aerodrome will be upgraded with a re-sealed apron, major upgrade of lighting and installation of animal proof fencing.
