Our Country, our shire
Supporting a strong, connected and resilient mornington shire
Mornington Shire is located on Mornington Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, the largest of the Wellesley Islands in remote north-west Queensland. Our Shire is home to the Lardil and Kaiadilt peoples, whose deep cultural knowledge, stories and connection to Country continue to shape community life on the island.
Mornington Shire Council works in partnership with Traditional Owners, local organisations and government agencies to support a strong, healthy and connected community. We deliver essential services, maintain infrastructure, and provide programs that enhance wellbeing, safety and local opportunity. As a remote island community, our environment, culture and geography play a central role in how we plan and deliver services. Council is committed to supporting residents, assisting visitors and service providers, and ensuring that Mornington Island remains a vibrant, resilient and sustainable place for future generations.
