The famous philanthropist winged his way to Mornington Island on Wednesday March 2 to open a community garden, at the invitation of Mornington Shire Council.
The garden will create a sustainable supply of fresh fruit and vegetables.
He was joined by the ABC’s Australia All Over radio presenter Ian “Macca” McNamara. Mr Smith told The Cairns Post he was very excited about the visit, his first to the remote Gulf community since flying over the island in his helicopter during his historic circumnavigational solo flight in the early 1980s.
