Bob and Rob visit aims to change tides for island
news
Two of the most recognised figures in the Australian Government; Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter and son Member for Mount Isa Robbie Katter, journeyed to Mornington Island to see first hand the extent of disadvantage in the Wellesley Island township. A welcomed visit, Mornington Shire Council greeted the political figures at the airport before discussions took place on the island’s scenic foreshore. State Member for Mount Isa Robbie Katter says “the visit is very confronting”, while apologising that more work had not been done. “To see the wharf in this present state, it is not a matter of urgency but a state of emergency,” Mr Katter said, adding, “I am overwhelmed and hope to assist Council in every way possible.” Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter was equally blown away by the townships’ years of governmental neglect, stating he wholeheartedly “supported Council’s endeavours in moving the region forward while pushing for projects that will result in a better standard of living”. “Ideas championed by true visionaries, such as the late Member of Parliament Ernie Bridge AM. have only fallen on deaf ears… we must develop our under-utilised north,” says Katter Snr. The six hour visit included a consult with residents eager to discuss other issues including the cost of REX flights for disadvantaged families in the region, (an average wage at $287.00 pp and, an average flight to Cairns valued at $1000.00 pp return), bringing a series of responses that “someone was making a lot of money”. “This is totally unaffordable for isolated families, absolutely something needs to be done,” Bob Katter said. With teary eyes, local Jane Ah-Kit explained the hardships of facing three sets of fees on groceries due to freight… a 2L milk or a small tub of butter is approximately $6.60. Mornington Shire Council Mayor Brad Wilson stated it is now mandatory for state and federal governments to support Council in terms of funding and regulation of prices. “Council are grateful to have hosted two well respected political figures, I applaud their efforts in visiting our community.” “For some time our region has been neglected, so it will take time to rebuild the people’s trust in the Australian Government, but this is certainly happening and it all starts with more government interactions, fulfilled promises and shaking a hand – asking a family if they are okay goes a long way out here.” “Over the past year, Council has been advocating for improved public facilities, including dialysis units, houses and integral infrastructure (marine precinct and recreational area)” Wilson stated, adding residents will now be looking for action. Improved circumstances, together with a commitment to push for a good result regarding the high price of goods and airline transport for islanders is now top priority for Robbie. “The community needs a lot of faith from the Government; that’s not there now,” Mr Katter said.
