A picture featuring a family pet, his nose drifting across the lily scents of Mornington Island dam
in the Gulf of Carpentaria, has won the September Photo Competition.
The image captured by Tuvili Uluilakeba celebrates the understated friendship between an
animal and man in the isolated region.
Mornington Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Frank Mills says the submissions were of high
calibre, and encouraged great image sharing with mainland Australia.
“A photograph submitted of a tinny parked on the shore perfectly captivates island life, while a
local residents rendition of traditional dance captured during a Ministerial visit certainly
surpassed Council’s expectations,” Mr Mills.
The finalists arranged the right ingredients to provide a visual story of the Shire, with over
13000 views online.
A rainbow sprawling across Gulf waters photographed by Sarah Jae Martin was judged most
creative, winning the Far North Queenslander a special edition artwork supplied by Mirndiyan
Arts.
“It is spectacularly beautiful out here and capturing that on camera is very easy… I love that my
photo has been seen by so many, showing others just how lucky we are out here,” says Sarah.
The competition was launched in conjunction with Mirndiyan Arts, Gununamanda Store and
Junkuri Laka to mark the beginning of spring.
The overall winner will receive a Shimano fishing pack valued at $450.00 to enjoy the excellent
fishing as summer quickly approaches
